What are 'Thin Bezel Monitors'?

Well, as the name suggests, these are the monitors that have slim borders. The bezels around the screen are there to hold it and protect it. Therefore, having a monitor screen without a bezel is not entirely possible with the current technology.

Fortunately, some advancements have made it possible to install narrow bezels on the screen. Most of the thin bezel monitors are generally elegant, simplistic in design, light and have a luxurious touch to them.

Essential For Multi-Monitor Setup

Narrow bezel monitors not only have an aesthetic appeal to them, but they are also essential for multi-monitor display setup. The slimmer the bezel, the better is the continuity between two screens.

A thick bezel right in between two screens can get annoying; this is especially true if you are a gamer. These days the bezel between the screens have become so slim that many brands have started calling them frameless monitor or edge to edge.

A multi-monitor setup is essential for work and gaming. You can not only set it up with a desktop, but also with laptops. For people who program, edit videos, work on rendering software, a setup like this becomes essential.

Are They Expensive?

Mostly, the prices of best thin bezel monitors are quite affordable and competitive with conventional screens. However, if you take a large sample, thin bezel monitors do seem to be charging a bit of a premium.

However, in most cases, the prices are almost the same as normal thick bezel screen. With the current trend, we are certain that slim bezel monitors will replace the conventional monitors.

ASUS MX27AQ is the flagship model of the famous ASUS Designo MX series. This is one of the most elegant thin bezel monitors. Currently, it is the thinnest bezel monitor in the market.

ASUS calls this frameless display a work of art.” This particular monitor features 2560×1440 resolution on a 27 inch AH-IPS Panel. Other than its beautiful looks, one of the most attractive features is the amount of ports it offers.

Although this monitor is elegant and packed with great features, it is quite expensive. The price increment is generally due to the WQHD resolution.

Guess how small the bezel on this screen is? 0.8 mm! This is practically invisible. But I do agree that its price would not be feasible for a majority of the customers for a multi-monitor display.

Unfortunately, for this price, you would at least expect a refresh rate of 144 Hz. That is not the case. 144 Hz is currently maintained well on TN panels, not on IPS.

Due to its 100% sRGB coverage, this monitor can perform in professional works such as graphics designing or photography.

A bit pricey, sure, but for all the right reasons. With 2560×1440 resolution, Nvidia G-Sync technology, and fully adjustable stand, this monitor has all the bells and whistles to keep the gamer in you entertained.

However, that is just scratching the surface; this monitor also boasts a refresh rate of 144 Hz for a jitter free graphics experience. Thanks to the TN panel, this monitor has one of the fastest response times of 1 ms.

TrustedReviews has given this monitor a solid 8/10, praising its image quality by saying that it delivers “Constant Solid Image Quality.”

Note that this monitor uses TN panel instead of the IPS pane. TN panel does improve response time, it does not have great colors and viewing angles of an IPS panel.

A wall mountable affordable 27-inch bezel-less monitor is the idea behind this screen. It has a minimalist design which looks quite stunning.

Surprisingly for an affordable monitor, this monitor offers a great range of connectivity options.

The only biggest drawback is the resolution. 1920×1080 is not a high enough resolution for a 27-inch monitor. Many prefer at least QHD resolution. However, at this price tag, you can’t really ask for more.

Being a wall mountable monitor, you can hook two or three of these monitors for an awesome multiple monitor display. You can get three of these at almost the same price range as the Dell Gaming Monitor listed above.

There is very little negative that can be said about this monitor. This can be proven by the flawless reviews that it has received from about a 1,000 customers.

An IPS monitor with 5 ms response time, a plethora of connectivity options and VESA mount capability at this price is a complete steal.

Although this is new in the market, this monitor has all the potential to become the next most favorite monitors for multiple monitor display setup.

Cnet.com’s Craig Simms has this to say about this monitor:

if you have basic needs, this may see you through — just be aware of the limited defective pixel policy.

This monitor is designed for gamers. Therefore, it has a gaming mode that can enable crosshair and timer on the screen.

Unfortunately, this monitor is not built for use in professional environments like designing and photography where color perfection is a necessity.

FAQ

How Thin Are Thin Bezel Monitors?
What are the Prime Differences Between Conventional and Thin Bezel Monitors?
Why Should You Purchase Thin Bezel Monitors When You Have Ultrawide Monitors?
What Brands to Go For?

Simple PC Monitor Buying Guide

In the simplest of the case, you need to consider three key points: Cost, Ports, and Size. These options are always related. For example, cost increases with size.

For more advanced users, you can consider things such as the response time, refresh rate, and panel technology. You can find the information on these topics further down below. Learning about the more advanced specs can help you make a more educated purchase.
PC Monitor Buying Guide'?

Cost

An average 24 inch LCD monitor can cost you anywhere between $140-$160. Although you can use a basic monitor for normal tasks, you would need to invest a bit more if you are looking for a quality thin bezel monitor.

The cost of a monitor depends on several factors including (but not limited to), ports, response time, refresh rates, display size, resolution, and panel technology.

Ports

The most common port is the VGA port which lets you interface with almost any PC, however, if you are looking for quality, get a monitor that has either DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI.

HDMI by far is the most flexible option as it can connect to PCs, Gaming Consoles, Set-Top Boxes, etc. Some Monitors may only have HDMI port(s). Likewise, some PCs only have VGA out and lack HDMI out. So make sure you have the compatible ports.

Size

For a 23 inch or 24-inch monitor, we recommend 1920 x 1080 as the native resolution. This would give you ample real estate to work on and fit multiple windows side by side.

For 27 inch and higher we recommend 2,560 x 1440 native resolution. To support this resolution, you would need to make sure your graphic card has Dual Link DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort.

Contrast Ratio

In technical terms, it is the “ratio of the luminescence of the brightest color to that of the darkest color.” In simple terms, this property of a monitor shows how deep the blacks would be and how bright whites would be. There are two properties usually: Dynamic and Static (Native) Contrast Ratio. Dynamic contrast ratio is usually seen as fantasy number. Static contrast ratio is the real deal.

Refresh Rate

“The frequency at which monitor’s display is updated.” So basically, the faster the refresh rate, the smoother would be the video. This is normally referred to as lowering “ghosting effect.” Conventional monitors have a refresh rate of 60Hz. Then there are monitors with 144Hz or more.

The higher the refresh rate, the more expensive would be the monitors.

Response Time

Measured in milliseconds, lower the rate, fewer would be the image artifacts. If you want to avoid unwanted motion blur effect, you need to make sure the response time is as low as possible. With that said, many people don’t notice any difference between 1 ms or 10 ms response time.

Along with the above-mentioned features, there are a few other essential features and aspect that you should consider:

Price

Although you should be ready to be a small premium for the thin monitor, you must make sure that it is not too expensive. This is especially true if you are planning on getting multiple monitors. As mentioned earlier, you need to make sure that buying two or three monitors would be significantly less than ultrawide monitors. Otherwise, you can just get those.

Fortunately, most of these monitors are quite budget friendly

VESA Mount

VESA mounting holes are deal makers or breakers in many cases. Only a handful of the best thin bezel monitors offer VESA mounting holes. Most are lacking in this aspect. VESA mounting holes are vital if you plan on mounting them on dedicated stands or on the wall.

Panel Type

There are many different panel types for thin bezel monitor. The three most common are IPS, TN and VA. Twisted Nematic (TN) is the most common panel type and it is also the oldest of the three. Although it is cheap and has fast response time, it does not promise great colors. In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel promises better colors.

There are even more advanced things consider such as color depth, color difference (deltaE), color gamut, different panel types, etc.; however, we will leave those to the professionals. Here are some of the more common terms used when purchasing PC monitors.

Thin Bezel Monitor, VESA Mounts, and Stands

VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand

VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand

Many are happy just to have their nearly frameless monitors side by side on their native stands.

However, there are a few who want more e.g. more adjustability, better organization and just down right better overall design look.

So this is where the thin bezel monitor with VESA mounting holes outshine any other category of the displays.

You can have them hooked up to dedicated stands that have similar VESA mounts.

So for example, if your monitor has 75 mm VESA holes, then you can find a stand with one, two, three or even more mounting hooks with 75 mm. These stands are supremely ergonomic, and their hooks are placed in a way that you can get a curved display.

The VESA mount above, VIVO Dual LCD Monitor Desk Mount Stand, for example (which also happens to be the best seller on Amazon.com) has both 75 and 100 mm mounting holes.

You can hook up two monitors with up to 27-inch displays.

Now this is a desk mount stand which means that you can just position and hook it at the back of your work table.

It does not have a stand. There are many other mounts, some have stands, some don’t. Some have two; some have three, and some have holes for many monitors.

There are two types of stands. Clamp stands (aka desk mount stand) and Free-standing Stands. The Clamp mounts hook up to your table; whereas, the Free-Standing Stands can be placed anywhere.
EZM Triple Monitor Mount Stand Free

EZM Triple Monitor Mount Stand Free

EZM Triple Monitor Mount Stand Free is a free standing mount, which supports up to 3 x 24-inch displays.

You can find both Clamp Mounts and Free Standing Mounts for all kinds of screen sizes.

The Desk Mount Stands give you more space and looks cleaner, but the Free Standing Mounts are more mobile and less limited in functionality.

One thing is clear, though, these stands give you a lot more organized display.

Now remember, getting a stand means added cost. So if you are out in the market looking for a budget setup, then getting dedicated mounts may not be the best option for you.

Some of these stands can cost as much as an average budget monitor. But, this is also only a one time purchase. You may change the screens whenever you like in the future; the stand will remain with you forever.

Bezel-Less Monitors are The Current Trend

bezel less monitor

It seems that there is no end to the desires of a gamer. A single large screened gaming monitor was considered to be quite satisfactory a few years ago.

Then came the multiple monitor displays. Although this was still an idea that was confined to gaming elites, it opened up a whole new horizon for the gaming industry to explore.

Back then multiple monitor display setups were admittedly ugly. With large bezels in between, the overall display wasn’t something that everybody would find to their taste.

Couple that with the fact the hardware back then wasn’t good enough to support multiple monitors at FHD resolution and high quality, there just wasn’t a good trend for thin bezel monitors.

These days, almost all of the mid – high-end gaming graphic cards can support multiple monitors at FHD resolution. They would lag only if the resolution is taken to higher than FHD resolution.

Therefore, a multiple monitor setup has become quite feasible for thin bezel monitor. Furthermore, now with the almost frameless monitors, the physical component of the display itself has improved. These thin bezel monitors solve that one lingering issue that everyone hated: the large gaps in between two screens.

However, as we have seen, and as stated earlier there is no end to gamers’ desires. It seems as if a normal FHD 24-inch triple monitor setup is not enough.

The trend has now changed to have an installation of monitors with WQHD resolution and a high refresh rate.

Currently, the high-end trend of multiple monitors is to combine triple 34-inch ultrawide gaming monitors with curved screens for a truly mind-boggling experience. Only time will tell where the gaming industry takes us next.

How to Setup Multiple Monitor Display?

The way you set up multiple monitor display depends upon the which graphic card you have. First of all, you need to make sure that your graphic card and the game that you play can support the number of display you want to setup.

As a general rule, if you have at least a mid-tier graphic card, then you would at least have three outputs. This way you can setup up a triple monitor display quickly.

Your graphic card could either have multiple HDMIs or a combination of DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

If this is the case, then you are ready to go. In case if your graphic card does not have three ports and has two, you can get a splitter. Unfortunately, splitters are not designed to support gaming.

AMD cards are the easier to setup for triple monitor display. They have a dedicated Eyefinity technology that is designed for multiple monitors. The NVIDIA counterpart to the Eyefinity is the NVIDIA Surround.

Many people prefer their monitors for multiple monitor setup to have a very narrow bezel. Moreover, they also prefer their monitors to have VESA wall mounts so that they can install their monitors on separate stands.

Visit NVIDIA 3D Surround website or AMD Eyefinity website.

Response Time and Gaming – Are IPS Monitors Suitable for Gaming?

This is one of the questions that Gamers often ask before choosing the IPS monitors.

The fact of the matter is that most of the thin bezel monitor are designed with IPS panels. So should you disregard them? Absolutely not!

IPS panels have a slow response time. The best that you can get is 5ms, and generally, you would find IPS monitor with 5ms-8ms response time.

This is entirely reasonable. Many have no issue with this as the IPS panel does have superior color quality.

The worst of the TN panels nowadays; on the other hand, have 2 ms response time. The best ones, featured in the high-end gaming monitors, have less than 1ms response time.

IPS panels do have wider viewing angles; however, I do not think that this feature is of any use to a gamer.

Gamers usually sit directly in front of the screen. Therefore, higher viewing angles would mean little to them. The lower the response time, the lower is the ghosting effect or artifacts of that you see trailing behind an object in an intense video.

However, the difference between a 5ms response time and 1 ms so little that many wouldn’t even see a difference.

The bottom line is that IPS panels are perfectly suitable for gaming. In fact, most high-end gaming monitors are based on IPS panel. Granted they have a slower response time, the difference is marginal.

Although you can go into all sorts of technical details, the simple fact of the matter is that G-Sync is a proprietary solution by NVIDIA to curtail the screen tearing and ghosting significantly.

It is a display synchronization method developed by NVIDIA.

Most of the latest gaming monitors come with with G-Sync or Free-Sync (AMD Counterpart). It smoothens the gameplay by a good margin. Other than gaming, there is no need for this. You do need to have a compatible NVIDIA Graphics Card.

V-Sync Vs G-Sync?

V-sync solved the screen tearing effect whenever the frame rate would go below the 60 Hz of the screen, However, to compensate for the screen tearing, V-Sync had the issue of screen stutter.

So with V-Sync, your display FPS would be locked at 60 Hz; however, should it dip below, it would cause a screen stutter. Why? To understand this, you need to be clear on what a screen tear and a screen stutter are.

  • A screen tear occurs when the v-sync is disabled, which implies that the graphics on the screen contain part of the last frame and part of the current frame, this is in typical cases. In the worst case, the screen tearing would be so significant that the graphics would just cease to exist.
  • A screen stutter occurs with the V-Sync on. Say your screen has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, should the FPS fall below 60 FPS, the system would compensate by taking a repeat frame for that single frame to load. So for example, if it were to drop to 59 FPS, it would take two frames to load up the one frame, thus stopping the motion for that one extra frame, which causes the screen to stutter.
  • G-Sync, on the other hand, saves the day by improving on the drawbacks of the V-Sync. It eliminates the screen stutter and tearing issues both at the same time. Your refresh rate and frame rates match in perfect harmony. How does NVIDIA accomplish this? As Tom Petersen from NVIDIA puts it, “it’s still one of our secret sauces.” So do not overthink how the technology works. Just enjoy what it delivers.

Is there an AMD counterpart?

For long NVIDIA enjoyed its unique space with the G-Sync; however, AMD has recently released its native technology to counter NVIDIA’s G-Sync. They are calling it the ‘Free-Sync.’

Free-Sync promises to solve the screen tearing and stuttering issues like the G-Sync.It does not require any additional hardware, and it is also an open standard thus the name ‘Free-Sync.’

The real debate is: can AMD’s Free-Sync handle the smooth transition with FPS dipping lower than say 40 or 30 FPS?

How smooth would it be then? How would it compensate as it does not rely on any dedicated hardware?

NVIDIA’s Tom Petersen argues that their superior G-Sync hardware-run technology gives them better control of managing the screen tearing and stuttering should the FPS fall below that low-end zone.

  • I think you made a mistake in the cons of the “7. ASUS VC239H – 23″ – Affordable Frameless Monitor” entry. It says that “The IPS panel used is not of the top notch quality” when in fact it’s AH-IPS which is the highest and newest you can get per my understanding.

Also, in your own review of the same monitor, you state “Along with that it offers a high end superior AH-IPS panels. Yes, IPS panels have categories. Some are newer, while others are older. The newer IPS panels have minimal backlight bleeding, which was an issue in the older panels.”

Could you please address this as to which it is and correct it. Otherwise this is an awesome list!

    Thanks,
    Donny

    • It is superior to the older e-IPS panels, but still not on par with the professional grade IPS panels. I am glad you liked it :D.
Anyhow, I have edited the comment. Thanks for bringing that up.

  • The LG 24MP88HV-S does have VESA mounting holes, also has VGA connector and does tilt (not much, but does). I have one on my desk and the VESA mount is one of my main criteria for a monitor. Please correct your evaluation.

  • Wow, Really a good long article. I will definitely recommend this blog that’s how an article should like you explain every new monitor and there pros and cons fairly. Awesome work.

  • I came to the site looking for super thin bezeled monitors, for a portrait setup. None of these qualify, as they all have thick bezels on the bottom. Do you know of any that would be good for a portrait setup?

  • Thank you for your effort.
    I have two questions,
1- from your review, what I understood that the best thin bezel Monitor till now is Acer, isn’t?
2- what do you think is the challenging with companies to provide 100% zero bezel monitor?

    • Hi, Saleh
The Acer monitor is the best monitor “on a budget”. It’s the best for the lowest price. However, there are much better models we reviewed that cost much higher.
I are not manufacturer, but I believe that an integration of 100% zero bezel comes from the introduction of curved screens. Zero bezel allows for a much smoother look, but it is very costly to make one without bumping the price too high.
